Free Guide: 5 Mistakes That Keep Babies Awake — and How to Fix Them
Hi, I’m Vicki — an infant sleep consultant and mum of two.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re tired, your baby’s tired, and you’re wondering if good sleep will ever happen again.
Here’s the truth: You’re not doing anything wrong — and better sleep is possible.
This guide will show you 5 common sleep mistakes parents make (without even realising it), and how to fix them using gentle, practical strategies you can start tonight.
Let’s make bedtime peaceful again.
5 Common Mistakes
1. Mistake: Keeping baby awake too long.
Fix: Watch wake windows. Babies need sleep before they get overtired. Look out for those early tired cues such as zoning out, staring into the distance and avoiding interactions.
2–3 months: 30-60 mins awake
4-5 months: 45 - 60 mins
6-8 months: 1.5 - 2 hours
9-12 months: 2.5 -3 hours
12-18 months: 3-4 hours
2. Mistake: Relying on motion or feeding to sleep every time.
Fix: Gradually separate feeding and sleep by moving feeding earlier in the bedtime routine.
3. Mistake: Inconsistent bedtime
Fix: Use a simple routine such as: Bath → PJs → Feed → Story → Cuddle → Sleep. Consistency helps your baby know sleep is coming and avoids surprises. The routine doesn't need to be complicated - it should be a simple routine that you can follow each night.
4. Mistake: Environment that’s too stimulating
Fix: Create a calm sleep space for little one:
Dark room (think blackout blinds)
Consistent temperature (16–20°C)
Avoid lights especially blue
White noise (if you are choosing to use white noise it should be played all night not just in short bursts)
5. Mistake: Expecting perfect sleep too soon
Fix: Focus on small improvements and don't make changes too soon. Changes take time to take effect. Remember sleep is not linear.
